What readers are saying
The story is a harmonious medley of hilarity and somberness. But its greatest charm is its realistic portrayal of modern society.
The debut novel by Andrew Hobgood, The Shametown Saga, is a brilliantly crafted and biting piece of satire that aims at a range of contemporary issues, from cancel culture to rural-urban divides. Hobgood has skillfully crafted a narrative that is at once darkly humorous and thought-provoking, with a cast of characters that are both hilarious and relatable.
The themes of cancel culture and political correctness taken to extremes are topical, and Hobgood adeptly lampoons them by creating a context in which all points of view are inherently silly. He balances the burlesque nonsense to spare neither left nor right-wing sensibilities.
